Aerojet Rocketdyne is currently seeking a Specialist Manufacturing Engineer - PLC for our facility in Culpeper, VA.

The successful individual will work under general guidance performing manufacturing engineering assignments requiring a wide application of standard principles, theories and concepts in the field, plus a working knowledge of other related disciplines.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will provide PLC support and manufacturing engineering support for developmental and production solid rocket motor programs through the application of established manufacturing engineering procedures. Prepare and maintain manufacturing process planning, provides training and guidance to shop for personnel related implementation of planning. Assist in developing and implementing processing improvements using process variation management/statistical process control tools. Assignments may involve supporting theoretical and experimental investigations, and assisting in planning of resources to support production requirements.

35% - Provide Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) support to lead several processes controlled by PLC systems and to include trouble-shooting problems/issues and programming new applications for the control of manufacturing processes with PLC software using applicable language. Ability to read and generate PLC ladder logic diagrams (input modules, central processing unit (CPU) and output modules).

25% - Working under limited general direction, and with guidance from Design Engineering, Quality Engineering and Safety, Health & Environment (SH&E) representatives, assists in the preparation and maintenance of detailed safe process instructions/planning by following established manufacturing and SH&E procedures. Performs technical supervision and troubleshooting of complex operations involved in the manufacture of propellants, bondliners, rocket motors, insulation components, insulated rocket motor cases, and composite rocket motor components.

15% - Reviews established solid rocket motor process instructions, monitor manufacturing activities for compliance with established safe process instructions. Originate, prepare and maintain detailed planning (Standard Operating Procedures) for the safe manufacture of propellant, bondliners, rocket motors and inert/composite components.

15% - Assists in analysis and development of solutions to specific manufacturing problems utilizing manufacturing engineering techniques such as specification of tooling and organization of work flow. Prepares process flow diagrams, leads Process Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (PFMEA), process hazards analysis (PHA), job safety analysis (JSA) and uses systematic approach and tools to identify root causes and problem solving. Performs mathematical calculations for geometric checks and chemical mixtures. Accurately reports problems, solutions and results in concise written and oral communications.

10% - Assists in preparing for and participate in process and manufacturing reviews. Participates in preliminary and critical design reviews. Interfaces with internal/external customers.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical (preferred), Aerospace, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering plus 9 years of industrial work experience as a manufacturing engineer and/or as a PLC programmer (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Experience should include demonstrated ability in manufacturing and the ability to interpret end item drawings. Experience with Lean Manufacturing principles and statistical process control tools a plus.

U.S. Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
