Overview

The REACH Paramedic Safety Officer will serve as the essential liaison between hospital-based specialty transport teams and the REACH aircraft applicable to assigned base, during transports where all patient care is assumed by the hospital based team. The role of Safety Officer is centered on safety and customer service.

Responsibilities

Preparation

* Performing all required daily, weekly and monthly equipment checks.
* Demonstrating familiarization with aviation safety terminology and practices.
* Orienting hospital based team members to all aircraft medical equipment, mounts, securing mechanisms, oxygen, inverter and safety features, as applicable.
* Within span of control, ensuring the aircraft is operationally ready for service at all times for hospital based team flights.
* Participating in daily shift pass-down process.

Mission

* Communicating with Flight Guard, municipalities and hospitals as appropriate and necessary during patient transport missions.
* Assist Pilot in Command with FAA required passenger briefings.
* Operating company communication equipment including, cellular phones, satellite phones, radios, and others as appropriate.
* Assisting with the loading and unloading of all hospital based team equipment as appropriate.
* Coordinating and assisting with the loading and unloading of the patients, isolettes, or other patient transport restraint systems as appropriate.
* Ensuring that patients, passengers and all onboard equipment are secured appropriately prior to lift and during all phases of flight.
* Troubleshooting problems that arise with aircraft medical equipment during transport.
* Accompanying the hospital based teams bedside to bedside and assisting as appropriate.
* If requested, engaging in patient care within scope, limited to patients in extremis and when resources are limited. Any direct patient care must remain within local paramedic scope and be at the explicit request of hospital based team members.
* Completing all required transport documentation per SOP.

General

* Ensuring the base/crew quarters is clean, organized and maintained to reflect a professional atmosphere.
* Participating in continuing education as assigned.
* Participating in company required safety and quality improvement programs.
* Actively participate in base meetings as scheduled, per SOP
* Completion of other duties as assigned

Qualifications

* Must possess current unrestricted state EMT–P license
* CCT and/or Flight Paramedic experience desirable.
* Current Certifications:
* AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)
* AHA or ASHI Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
* AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), ACEP Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS), or ENA Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course
* AAP Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

* Must possess or acquire local accreditation within 90 days of hire date
* Must have a recent 3 or more years of ambulance or emergency department experience.
* If using part time experience to qualify for this position, must be able to document a work history with a minimum average of 4 shifts per month over the past 12 months.
* Must possess and demonstrate strong customer service and public relations skills.
* Must possess and demonstrate competence with basic computer skills.
* Must be able to fly extended missions without experiencing airsickness.

Physical Requirements:

* Perform activities requiring a moderate amount of standing, sitting, and walking.
* Able to conduct activities requiring a moderate to rigorous amount of static pushing, pulling and lifting (knuckle height and ankle height).
* Capable of lifting 75lbs. Floor to bench height.
* Ability to hear routine aircraft and medical equipment noises.
* Maintains a “duty” weight of less than 230 lbs (body weight + uniform/equip).
* Requires close and distant visual acuity.
* Requires periodic computer use and typing.
* Ability to wear an approximately 3.5 lb helmet for prolonged periods of time under the stressors of flight

Environmental Conditions:

* Duties are performed in either indoor or outdoor environments.
* May be exposed to routine office noises, moderate electrical or mechanical hazards and frequent exposure to an aircraft hanger environment where the Paramedic Safety Officer may be exposed to loud aircraft noise, fumes, gases, odors, dust particles and mechanical/electrical and chemical hazards.
* Safety Officer must be present at work site to complete the job.

Protective Equipment:

* Nomex full body flight suit
* Boots: leather or fire-resistant material with steel or carbon safety-toe. Safety-shank preferred
* PPE – latex gloves, goggles, and particulate respirator
* Hearing protection (plugs, band, head set, and/or helmet)

Work Place Conditions:

* Paramedic Safety Officer is physically based at a base “crew quarters” for 24 hour shifts and must be prepared at a moment’s notice to begin air ambulance missions that last from ½ hour to 12 hours in duration. The crew quarters are equipped with partial kitchen, shower, rest and sleeping facilities.

Work Schedule:

The current standard shift at REACH for all flight crew members is 7 rotating 24-hour shifts, per every 4-week period. Flight shifts may extend past 24 hours, due to patient transport activities.

Transfer Ability:

Paramedic Safety Officers are not eligible to transfer laterally to open Flight Paramedic positions. Paramedic Safety Officers that meet Flight Paramedic qualifications as well as other provisions specified the Internal Transfer policy, may apply to posted Flight Paramedic positions and will be given preferential consideration among external candidates.
