Key Accountabilities

Reporting to the Manager, Deicing Operations Maintenance, this position is responsible for the repairs/maintains engines, component parts and attachments to deicing vehicles, mobile, fixed and towed ground support equipment, including glycol recovery vehicles, diesel tractors, compressors, diesel, gasoline and gas turbine powered (stand-by) power units. The successful incumbent will also carry out inspections and preventative maintenance on deicing vehicles, ground support and emergency power units.

* Repairing and modifying deicing vehicles equipped with hydraulic telescopic booms, data transfer systems, vehicle operations computers, computerized nozzle and glycol mixers, storage tanks, glycol burner unit, and any associated program logic controllers (PLCs), etc

* Overhauling of components requiring extensive knowledge with computerized fuel injection systems, engine tune-ups and problem diagnosis

* Inspecting, adjusting, repairing and/or replacing all major and minor vehicle and equipment components, transmissions, air brakes hydraulics and electrical systems

* Rectifying problems on vehicles and equipment, which have suffered failures of components or entire systems

* Disassembling complete units, when required, and rebuilding, incorporating new, repaired or replacement components

* Checking and repairing brakes, repairing or replacing brake drums, rotors, linings or disc pads, wheel and master cylinders, power assist and brake lines, wheel bearings and seals and repacks

* Inspecting and repairing all steering components, shock absorbers, springs, torsion bars and visually checking alignment

* Performing major and minor maintenance and repair work and replacement of units or components to all emergency power units

* Cummins and Volvo experience would be considered and asset

* Diagnosing problems with air conditioning units and doing complete repairs including evacuating and recharging the entire system

* Testing and calibrating vehicles to ensure that exhaust emissions are kept within specifications

* Performing general servicing including oil changes, filters, lubrications, safety equipment inspections, tires, batteries, wipers, lights, glass, etc. Cleaning, degreasing vehicles and equipment

* Carrying out preventive maintenance inspections on all emergency power units installed at the Central Deicing Facility

* Performs other duties relating to deicing vehicles, ground support equipment and emergency power

* Other Duties as required

Qualifications

* High School diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience

* Must have minimum 2 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic and direct experience in vehicular and equipment maintenance gained in a variety of jobs

* Demonstrated experience working over a very wide range of equipment

* Must possess a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification in the trade of Truck and Coach Technician (310T)

* Experience in aircraft deicing operations at Toronto Pearson International Airport is considered an asset

* Valid Ontario Provincial Class G driver’s license

* The successful incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a D/A class AVOP permit within thirty (30) days of appointment to the position

* Experience in maintaining aircraft deicing equipment considered an asset

* Must be able to obtain and retain a Transport Security Clearance

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of vehicle technology associated with the design, inspection, testing and use of deicing vehicles and equipment

* Ability to maintain up to date knowledge of current Ministry of Transportation regulations and practices

* Ability to maintain up to date knowledge of current technology of a very diversified fleet of light and heavy technologically advanced equipment

* Knowledge of computer diagnostics and programming tools to perform troubleshooting and maintenance duties

* Knowledge of proper response to hazardous spills and containment, record keeping practices and health and safety practices

* Knowledge of maintenance of tools during work

* Knowledge of the layout of the airport

* Demonstrated interpersonal and problem solving skills

* Ability to work rotational shift work (days, nights and weekends) during the winter months
