Position Purpose:

The Aerial Port Cargo Handler (APCH) is responsible for the safe movement and organization of simulated air transportation cargo items needed to properly utilize the Cargo Load Trainer (CLT). The APCH will take directions from the Aerial Port Leader (APL) in the loading and unloading of cargo from/to the CLT, conduct any necessary safety precautions for handling dangerous materials, special cargo, and participate in the movement of cargo and baggage around the CLT. Duties include on-loading/off-loading via Material Handling Equipment (MHE), securing cargo, determining orientation of cargo, building palletized loads and completing load plans.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

* Ensures the use of safety procedures when handling cargo and packages used in the Cargo Load Training (CLT) exercises.

* Loads/unloads aircraft containers and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner and ensures all cargo is properly secured as it would be for actual flight operations.

* Performs Safety Observer duties when Material Handling Equipment (MHE) is used.

* Maintains and organizes training loads based on scheduled cargo load training activity.

* Operates and utilizes a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, self-propelled equipment, non-self-propelled equipment, dunnage, warehouse pallets, cargo straps, cargo chains, cargo devices, pallet couplers, A-7000 tie-down fittings, application of shoring, 463L pallets, 463L pallet nets, and cargo handling system components.

* Inspects cargo offered for load training to verify eligibility and proper documentation, packaging, and marking.

* Coordinates with Aerial Port Leader / Boom Operator Instructor on cargo selected for training load.

* Checks cargo against planned manifests.

* Provides documents to reflect actual cargo manifest used during real world missions.

* Repairs or arranges for repairs of cargo training loads damaged in training.

* Ensures all governmental regulations, company policies/procedures, and safety/security requirements are followed.

* Thorough understanding of passenger and cargo movement functions.

* Completion of a basic air transportation course.

* Fully competent in cargo pallet building.

* Experience in functions such as processing cargo and loading and unloading an aircraft.

* Must possess a valid state driver’s license to operate government vehicles.

* Must be familiar with facility management practices.

* Must be familiar with standard scheduling practices.

* Must be familiar with common cargo loading and aviation safety practices.

* Must be familiar with military warehousing practices and methods.

* Demonstrate good organizational and time management skills.

* Lift and push heavy objects.

* Provides excellent customer service.

* Possess a strong understanding of cargo loading principles, restraint criteria, and Material Handling Equipment.

* Must be flexible to work on call and or shift differential schedules.

Education and Formal Training:

Associates degree or higher desired.

Experience:

Five (5) years’ of experience in aircraft cargo loading operations required. Military Air Terminal Operations Center (ATOC), Contingency Response Wing (CRW), or Tactical Control Element (TALCE) experience is highly preferred. Five (5) years’ of experience as a crew member or working in an aviation/flight-line environment preferred. Two (2) years’ of experience with Joint Inspection (JI), special handling, and hazardous cargo operations preferred.
