Job Role:

Trainee Air Traffic Controllers
£50k salary after three years*

No aviation experience necessary. This role’s all about you. How you think and solve problems. How you handle pressure. How you adapt to unpredictable situations like extreme weather events.

Believe it or not, these qualities are rare: less than 1% of applicants make it through the selection process. But if you make the grade, you’ll be greatly rewarded – from training and benefits to job satisfaction.

What will I do?
Once trained, you’ll coordinate up to 25 aircraft – not only as they take off and land, but throughout their journey across our airspace. Communicating constantly with pilots, you’ll keep each plane a safe distance apart and react swiftly to changing events.

What does the training involve?

Training takes around three years. The first nine months will see you learning on simulators and studying everything from meteorology to aviation law. You’ll then move into an Ops room and start doing the job for real. Once validated as an ATCO, you can expect to earn upwards of £50,000.

What will I need?
A passion for the job, resilience, a calm nature, good powers of concentration, strong spatial awareness and, of course, excellent problem solving skills. You’ll also need to pass a medical. As for qualifications, you’ll need at least five GCSEs (although many people who join us have A levels and degrees too).

*Qualified controllers with three years’ experience can expect to earn between £46,461 – £51,781 plus shift pay of £5,543.
