Zenon are currently searching for a Structures Design Engineers on behalf of a successful maintenance repair organization based in Surrey. 

The structural design engineer will be responsible for a variety of tasks associated with all aspects of structural design and certification for installations on small and large, fixed and rotary wing aircraft, who will be reportable to the Head of Design

Main Responsibilities of Position:

The scope of design, certification and project management activities will depend on the engineer’s level of experience and qualifications; all activities will be agreed and approved by the Head of Design. These activities will include:

  • Preparation of structural documents (e.g. substantiation reports)
  • Ensuring that all design procedures are adhered to, per the Design Organisation’s Handbook
  • Adhering to project timescales/time management of own projects
  • Addressing in-service difficulty reports/design queries after completion of a design
  • Providing on-site assistance to aircraft surveys or aircraft maintenance staff
  • Maintaining an awareness of current aeronautical practices/issues
  • Continued professional development: attending training courses, seminars, etc.
  • Peer group training, e.g. mentoring new staff, developing existing staff knowledge

Desirable experience required:

Analysing:

  • Stress of metallic and composite structures
  • Stress of riveted, bolted, bonded, welded joints
  • Stress of secondary and tertiary structures for fixed and rotary wing aircraft
  • Static and fatigue stress due to inertia and aerodynamic loads
  • Weight and balance of installations/aircraft

Knowledge/use of:

  • Stress concentrations and surface finishes
  • Stress corrosion and SCC
  • Design assurance requirements of EASA Part 21J
  • Airworthiness requirements, e.g. CS/Part-25
  • Pseudo requirements, e.g. RTCA DO-160
  • Calculation program, e.g. Mathcad
  • Relevant data sources, e.g. ESDU, MMPDS
  • Damage tolerance program, e.g. AFGROW
  • Finite element modelling and analysis program, e.g. NASTRAN
  • Modal analysis/frequency response/RAP testing and how to control natural frequencies
