Description
Sophomore, Junior or Senior Level Co-op position in any of the following Flight Sciences disciplines:
Aerodynamics: Aerodynamic analysis of aircraft modifications using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and classical analysis methods validated by wind tunnel or flight test programs. Analyses include development of steady and unsteady pressure distributions, drag estimates, aircraft range and endurance calculations, take-off and landing performance, and stability and control analysis.
Structural Dynamics: Aeroelastic and dynamic load analyses including frequency response and modal analysis of modifications to primary and secondary aircraft structure including systems and components. Tasks would include determination of dynamic mass and stiffness characteristics. Responsibilities might also include participation in flight tests programs to collect and reduce dynamic data used to develop vibration spectra, evaluate flutter characteristics, and to determine acoustic profiles.
Structural Analysis: Structural analysis of aircraft modifications using classical analysis and finite element methods. Determination of stress levels in primary and secondary aircraft structure, systems, and equipment resulting from applied and induced loads, as well as the comparison of these stresses with material properties to predict failure and structural instabilities given due consideration to applicable failure theories. Responsibilities might also include fatigue and damage tolerance analysis.
Mass Properties: Perform basic aircraft weight and balance calculations. Calculate component weights and determine horizontal moment arms from engineering drawings. Weigh individual components. Prepare and maintain a weight accounting and reporting database. Prepare Chart A (Basic Weight Checklist Record). Assist in aircraft inventory and weighing.
