The Waveform Software Department in the Communication Systems Engineering directorate designs, develops, enhances, ports, tests, and maintains embedded waveform software applications for the majority of all airborne and ground-based military communication products offered in Collins Aerospace Missions Systems.

We are seeking a Sr. Engineering Manager with the leadership and technical skills to manage the engineering development and program execution of waveform software for critical and strategic programs in Mission Systems. These programs address multi-billion dollar markets for both airborne and ground radios. The ideal candidate strives for predictable execution, fosters continuous improvement, and embraces engagement with a talented and diverse group of software engineers.

Job Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include engineering management and engaged oversight in all aspects of embedded software development and integration efforts as well as project management activities including earned value analysis and project planning.

Planning, organizing, recruiting/hiring, resource allocation, personnel development, performance management, salary planning, and overall group management of software engineers. The position requires project execution direction to the engineering team. The candidate must demonstrate sound decision making skills, possess communication and networking skills, be capable of having crucial and critical conversations, and have the ability to accurately forecast project costs and completion dates. A successful candidate will also have a high-level understanding of systems engineering and hardware development.

The candidate will manage daily activities of software engineers and will work directly with project engineering, program management, and support organizations to develop embedded software for military communications products based on software defined radio architectures.

The candidate will lead the engineering team by using strong interpersonal communication, as well as mentoring and negotiating skills, and will be responsible for managing project risks/issues and elevating to upper management when appropriate. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for adhering to and supporting Collins Aerospace process methodologies while developing and managing commitments to meet project financial and schedule deliverables and quality requirements.

A successful candidate should have working knowledge of embedded software development and the use of C/C++, as well as a proven ability to guide and lead software development processes, experience with cost account and schedule management, and demonstrated experience mentoring other engineers. Extensive experience in all software development phases from concept, architecture, preliminary and detailed design, code and unit testing, software/hardware integration, qualification testing, and product deliveries is required, and it is highly desired that the candidate has used agile development methodologies.

The candidate will work directly with systems engineering teams and will coordinate requirements identification, as well as the development and acceptance testing of software deliverables. A successful candidate will need the ability to keep multiple programs and development tasks organized while supporting the various project’s objectives of cost and schedule.

Basic Qualifications:

Candidates for this role should possess a Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced degree and 5 years of prior relevant experience

U.S. Citizenship is required.

Must possess or be eligible to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret Clearance. The candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements. Preferred applicants will currently hold a Secret (or above) security clearance, or have held one within the past two years.

Practical experience in all aspects/phases of embedded software design, development, and test.

Experience creating, assigning, and tracking work assignments in a management or project engineer role.

Proven program leadership experience and practical project planning experience.

Demonstrated experience with Agile software development and planning models.

Proven capability to motivate and challenge engineers as well as keeping them engaged.

A passion for ethical behavior, tackling challenging assignments, and growing the capabilities of a team.

Ability to travel up to 5% of the time.

The ideal candidate will also have the following, as they are advantageous considerations for this position:

Familiarity with software defined radio architectures, networking communications waveforms (MANET, TDMA, etc), and HF/VHF/UHF/L-band waveforms.

Experience with accurate software bidding estimation efforts (e.g. SEER-SEM estimation modeling tool), detailed pursuit narrative write-ups, and a solid working knowledge of earned value management.

Experience with configuration management tools and the ALM tool suite, as well as experience in the use of embedded operating systems (as well as Linux).

Experience with Ethernet and routing protocols, wireless technologies, and radio systems development and network design.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks while addressing priority changes at any time.

An advanced STEM degree or an MBA.
