We are currently searching for a Sr Engineering Manager – Avionics Safety to join our team in Cedar Rapids, IA (1000). A comprehensive relocation package is available for qualified candidates.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will perform in a Senior Engineering Manager position providing leadership, execution oversight, and administrative management for the Cedar Rapids Safety team within the Commercial Systems Reliability, Maintainability and Safety (RMS) group. The individual will work under general and limited direction and will need to exercise excellent leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making skills in order to successfully meet organization goals and task execution commitments.

Avionics Safety engineering applies an efficient and disciplined approach to the safety assessment process focused on value added activities and built on advanced tools and methods. The candidate will act as a part of the leadership team within safety engineering responsible for developing a team with the necessary skills to support the commercial systems organization and advance the discipline of safety engineering. The candidate will also be responsible for overseeing and ensuring the continuous improvement of the safety engineering organization’s implementation of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) methodology of development.

The successful candidate should have an understanding of avionics systems development including familiarity with industry standards applicable to aircraft and systems certification under 14 CFR Parts 23 and 25 such as ARP4761, ARP4754A, DO-178B, and DO-254 in order to provide technical leadership to the Cedar Rapids safety team. Further, the candidate should have project planning and management skills with ability to work across many concurrent developments and effectively manage dynamic priorities. Knowledge in the agile development philosophy and methods is a differentiator among candidates. Lastly, the successful candidate must be highly skilled in working collaboratively with peer RMS leaders and senior subject matter experts as well as with the leadership of multiple Commercial Systems development teams.

Job Responsibilities

* Coach and advance the career interests of 10-13 full-time safety engineers from entry level to experienced individuals.

* Responsible for resource acquisition, personnel development/coaching, performance reviews, salary planning, and overall administrative management of the group. Identifies and develops succession plans for key positions.

* Creates and cultivates an engaging team environment.

* Primary safety support point of contact for avionics programs development teams. Develop strong communication and working relationships with leaders in CS product teams.

* Responsible for successful completion of safety deliveries and support for cognizant programs.

* Coordination and review of RMS inputs to Engineering Bids. Has a good understanding of required tasks and ability to estimate effort/cost and schedule. Maintains and uses previous performance to provide basis of estimate while developing methods to improve efficiency.

* Ensure tasks performed in adherence to Collins Aerospace Engineering and RMS processes and expectations.

Basic Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline is required.

* Previous aircraft/avionics safety experience preferred.

* Product Development experience is required with Systems or Hardware experience preferred).

* Previous experience managing/leading teams is required.

* Project Management experience is preferred.

* Aerospace industry experience is required.
