Senior Systems Engineer (Microprocessor Based Systems

We have an immediate opening for a Senior Systems Engineer to provide systems engineering talents to an optical laboratory facility in support of various Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) related experiments. The individual, with minimal guidance, will be responsible for supporting all activities associated with the operation and function of the optical laboratory. This is a hands-on position with duties ranging from the basic design, development, repair, sustainment, modification, and operation of electronic hardware, mechanical systems, optical systems, and system facilities, to the alignment and co-alignment of telescope and telescope optical systems, alignment and repair of laser optical systems, repair of a sub-arcsecond pointing gimbal, servo and control subsystems, as well as the repair and operation of laser charging and control systems, precision timing equipment, and weather sensing equipment and other responsibilities as assigned.

Basic CAD skills in the areas of electronics, optics, and mechanics for system design, development, and documentation. The individual will be required to understand the principles involved in satellite laser ranging, and operate the station within data quantity and quality requirements. Operations and support activities may include some daytime, nighttime, and weekend periods.

General description includes:
Performs a variety of engineering work in the development of an operable system capable of meeting requirements within imposed constraints including mass, cost and schedule.
Designs and/or analyzes subsystem interfaces to ensure that subsystems are integrated and work together to form a viable complete system.
Performs functional analysis of a system to ensure it meets performance criteria and mission constraints and to feed the analysis results back to the subsystem development teams.
Usually is an engineering generalist with knowledge in several different engineering disciplines such as electrical, mechanical and aerospace.
Uses standard procedures in carrying out assignments associated with research, design, development or analysis of specific parts, components, interfaces, or minor phases of a project.
Coordinates with other technical personnel in solving technical problems, fabricating equipment, gathering information, formulating plans, designs, cost estimates and specifications.
Provides assistance to higher level engineers in most of the detail work and translates technical guidance and data received into usable information applicable to the particular assignment.
May serve as company representative advising customer and contractor personnel on technical requirements for products or services, support equipment and electronic equipment installation.
Plans, directs and coordinates engineering functions involved in the design and development, installation, testing and integration of systems and subsystems.
Directs or conducts research studies necessary for the improvement or reconfiguration of systems or subsystems.
Serves as the customer interface and organizational consultant on significant issues requiring technical guidance, redirection or resolution.
Directs the work of lower level technical personnel as required.
Assists in compiling and preparing comprehensive technical reports and proposals.
May participate as a team member of multiple teams; may act as primary intra-organizational liaison.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

BS degree in engineering or applied science with at least 3-5 years of related experience. Specific contract requirements regarding education and experience will prevail.

Additional Qualifications:
Software Experience:
Minimum of 1 year experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; Experience with Microsoft Project is an
asset. Experience with the computer aided design software: AutoCAD, P-CAD, SOLIDWORKS, ZMAX or equivalent.
Realtime programming experience in Linux, Windows, Lynx, and others is a plus.

Education, training and or experience with precise timing, masers, lasers, optics, or telescopes.

Travel – This position will involve both domestic and international travel for preparation and installation of SLR systems. Ability to obtain and keep a passport is required along with other travel requirements relevant to US regulations and regulations of countries to be entered for work.
