To support the Principal Engineers and the Head of the E&MT Safety Engineering Group.
There will be a requirement to provide task guidance and project governance in accordance with company procedures and legislative and Ministry of Defence (MOD) policy requirements within E&MT and other Babcock Business Units and MOD and Industry customers.

The role will require the gathering of suitable evidence to support the development of non-nuclear Safety and Environmental Case (SEC) for items of Product, Services and Systems on behalf of the MOD Equipment Authority (EA), and for those systems integrated and supported by Babcock as the Prime Defence Contractor.

Accordingly, the Principal Safety Engineer will be required to present the S&E argument via an appropriate Safety and Environmental Case Report (SECR), or other S&E deliverables as directed.

Principal tasks and responsibilities are:
Act as support to Discipline Lead and Principal Engineers for Safety and Support Engineering Functions
Authorising Safety documentation as directed by Discipline Lead/Principal Engineers
Chairmanship of Safety Reviews to identify best technical solution to fulfil Project objectives
Representing Group and/or Department as directed by Discipline Lead/Principal Engineers
Managing Safety projects; working to time, cost and quality
Providing professional safety engineering support to surface ship and submarine projects
Supporting in the preparation of commercial tenders/ bid responses.
To manage staff in accordance with, business and HR procedures and guidelines.

Interfacing Responsibilities
For the principal tasks and responsibilities identified in Section 4 to be carried out and discharged effectively, there are a number of limited responsibilities of other groups or persons that must also be discharged. Principal amongst these are:
Other groups and sections within E&MT
Other Babcock Business units
Ministry of Defence
Other Safety Case Owners

Contractor is authorised to
Produce formal safety and environmental deliverables
Provide Assurance on deliverables as delegated

Qualifications and Experience Requirements
Academic:
Degree qualified in a related engineering discipline (HND/HNC level qualification with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered)
Ship Safety Management Office (SSMO) Certificate
Member of a relevant institution (e.g. IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS etc.) and hold Chartered status (or be working towards).

Experience
Extensive knowledge and experience of conventional non-nuclear safety engineering management in the Sea Domain accordance with Def Stan 00-56 (Safety Management Requirements for Defence Systems), DSA01/02 (Defence Policy for Health Safety and Environmental Protection (HS&EP and JSP 418 Management of Environmental Protection in Defence
Knowledge of environmental issues & legislation would be an advantage
