Senior Application Engineer – Power Generation and Protection Relays

Join our team as we focus on power management solutions for critical power applications such as data centers and hospitals and as we integrate increasing renewable energy levels to create hybrid microgrids to transform the delivery of power.

Woodward seeks a Senior Applications/Sales Support Engineer for power management and/or protection relay products within our Integrated Package Control Systems (IPCS) business in Loveland, Colorado. This role focuses on sales and customer support covering the applications for our Power Generation and Protective Relay products, with the ultimate goal of growing revenues and expanding our customers and scope.

This role requires knowledge and experience with power systems, generation, switchgear and/or protection relays. Experience with Woodward or competitor products in these areas is helpful, as well as experience in field trouble shooting, customer support, and system design.

Woodward is a multinational company, headquartered in Fort Collins, CO. As part of an international company, collaboration with and support to the engineering team in Germany is included. Woodward is an independent designer, manufacturer, and service provider of control solutions for the aerospace and industrial markets. Our industrial related systems and components enhance the performance of industrial gas and steam turbines, reciprocating engines, compressors, wind turbines, renewable energy integration, microgrids and other energy related industrial equipment.

Position Purpose:

This position will provide technical support to ensure customer satisfaction and sales revenue growth related to power management and distribution products and/or our protection relays. You will be the product expert, helping to specify, apply, and support our products, and will also participate in the development and modification of existing products, in support of customer and market requirements. The team consists of a sales manager, customer account managers, and sales support/application engineers with the focus on the North American market. The role reports to the Sales Manager.

Essential Functions:

* Provide technical support for the commercial team in customer engagement, proposal creation, solution concept and design, and customer presentations.

* Assist customers and Customer Service group to resolve technical product issues, including troubleshooting with the customer and interfacing with product development team.

* Participate in international and multi-site projects and work with international account teams.

* Identify product improvements to address customer needs, deliver feedback to development and Product Line Manager to support product improvement and the development of Product Roadmaps.

* Provide technical product training to customers, account managers and channel partners.

* Provide product and market information to account managers and channel partners.

* Participate and perform action items as a team member or lead projects involving other engineers and cross-functional team members

* Provide engineering support internally as required, including more complex software/hardware test plan creation, test setups/troubleshooting, engineering documentation updates including BOMs, wiring diagrams, drawings, electrical schematics, training material, and creation of manuals for the customer.

* Provide application software support with Woodward GAP software and associated operator interface/HMI software to support test setups, debug recommendations, and provide required application changes.

Other Functions:

* Participate in company marketing and sales activities, and industry technical meetings and conferences.

* Participate in competitive market/product analysis.

* Support global product launch.

* Provide Field Service as needed.

Qualifications

Working Environment / Physical Activities:

* Work is mainly performed in a general office environment; however, the job may require interaction with other departments and movement throughout the facilities and/or hands-on activities at customer location, which may lead to exposure to, for instance, noise, chemical solutions, and dust and extreme temperatures

* Frequent domestic or international travel may be required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Power management knowledge and experience, including generator controls, switchgear, and/or protection relays.

* Solid knowledge of power engineering principles.

* Advanced knowledge of energy control or power management technologies.

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

* Ability to work independently, manage time/priorities, self-motivated and goal oriented

* Ability to effectively operate in the project team environment and communicate with customers.

* Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations (internal, customers and management); writes and communicates technical reports.

* Proficient written and verbal communication skills in English.

* Competent skills in complex problem solving and trouble-shooting

* Competent in the use of PCs and associated software.

* Proficient in Woodward GAP software or similar industrial application software.

* Company expert on a power management products or technologies.

* Demonstrates leadership skills; ability to drive results across organizational boundaries.

Education or Formal Training:

* BS Engineering Degree or equivalent, or extensive Woodward product knowledge and demonstrated ability to interface with customers.

* Six Sigma Greenbelt preferred.

Experience Required:

* Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevant field.

* 3+ years in a technical sales support or technical commercial-facing role.
