The Challenge / The Opportunity

Data @ Skyscanner is a cross-functional group of people (Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Data Science) working together to make Skyscanner a data-first travel company. Our overall data strategy can be broken up into three areas:

* Capturing the right data from travellers and partners

* Making data easily usable by and accessible to all

* Using data to make great traveller & partner experiences

Data Science is involved, as an Enabler and Consumer, in all three parts of the ecosystem.Some aspects of this ecosystem are nascent and others more well-formed, but there is still much to be built and many problems to be solved. In Data Science, Enablers of the ecosystem work primarily on the platform (e.g. working with Engineers and Data Scientists on generic solutions for deploying model families at scale) and Consumers of the ecosystem contribute data, features, and models to the system in order to make better experiences for partners and travellers.

There is a unique opportunity to join Skyscanner London as a Senior Data Science Manager to help shape the future of the Enablers in this space, to help build a scalable platform and in the process, transform Skyscanner in to a data-first travel company.

The Role

In Skyscanner, our people managers are also doers. Further, we are organised into squads (cross-discipline teams which execute against a specific goals) and tribes (logical groupings of squads).

Some expectations for this role are contribution and people management in the following ways:

* Directly managing a senior team of Data Scientists tasked with enabling our data strategy at scale

* Contribution to the vision, direction, and identity, of the Data Science Department as a whole

* Leading the Data Science discipline across a tribe

* Working with tribe leadership to inform strategy, manage expectations, and define company-wide communication strategy for the tribe

* Building while doing, applying data science to concrete business problems and helping to build a scalable platform in the process

* Using your technical acumen and leadership to build a world-class team

* Forging cross-tribe relationships to consistently deliver

Your Background

Some of the qualities and backgrounds we look for in this role include:

* Evidence of good product sensibilities, particularly in that problems are fully understood before solutions are presented

* Experience working in the Internet Economy

* Ability to grow both Individual Contributors and People Managers in technical, interpersonal, and communication abilities

* Experience attributing value of data science work to non-technical people

* Exposure to a broad application of data science to business problems (machine learning, advanced analytics, data engineering, etc.)

* Past recruitment of top talent
