Role Overview

We are seeking an engineering professional with experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for our Aerodynamics, Systems and Test Group at Collins Aerospace, located in Burnsville, MN.

The Aerodynamics Engineer will support ongoing and new programs related to aircraft air data sensor design, including pitot and pitot static probes, angle of attack (AOA) sensors, total air temperature (TAT) sensors, and ice detectors. The primary analysis activities will be focused on aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics. The ideal candidate will be expected to contribute technical expertise and leadership in both R&D and new business pursuit activities. In this role, the candidate will be responsible for aero-thermal analysis of Collins Aerospace products and assessing their performance in normal and adverse weather conditions. The candidate is also expected to provide consulting in the areas of aerodynamics and aero-thermal analysis to the engineering design teams within Collins Aerospace and to external customers.

Primary Responsibilities:

* Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of external, compressible airflow at aircraft flight conditions with minimal direction
* Predictions of aerodynamic and thermodynamic performance of air data sensors mounted on the aircraft fuselage
* CFD simulation of multiphase flow of air and water, representing aircraft icing environments
* Working on a multidisciplinary team of engineers to drive new sensor designs
* Working with external customers to support air data probe installations, flight test campaigns, and sensor performance predictions
* Support of wind tunnel test campaigns at on site aerodynamic and icing facilities, including test condition generation and results analysis
* Developing future analysis capabilities and standard work templates based on current activities

Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree and 3 years of relevant experience required. Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics preferred. In the absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required.

Basic Qualifications:

* Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation experience of compressible airflow required.
* Experience with a commercial CFD code and meshing tools is required
* Experience with MATLAB is required
* Strong communication skills for describing aerodynamic analysis results to multidisciplinary teams is required
* Aptitude with ANSYS Fluent is preferred
* Experience with detailed CAD modeling is preferred
* Background in aircraft icing and/or aero-thermal analysis using CFD methods preferred
* Exposure to and experience with aircraft systems, flight testing and wind tunnel testing is preferred

Nothing matters more to Collins Aerospace than our strong ethical and safety commitments. As such, all U.S. positions require a background check, which may include a drug screen.

Note:

* Background check and drug screen required (every external new hire in the U.S.)
