Our Aviation Systems & Programs team is looking for a full-time Rotorcraft Flight Controls Systems Engineer for our headquarters in the greater Kansas City area. In this role you will be responsible for leading development, implementation, integration, and testing of automatic flight control systems (AFCS) through close collaboration with multiple talented teams. Garmin’s rotorcraft flight control solutions span both aftermarket and forward fit OEM integrated flight deck applications. Essential functions to succeed in this role include:

* Leading development of systems requirements for autopilot/flight director/SAS systems including system performance, system interfaces, architecture, and algorithms

* Strong background and experience in application of classical control theory to rotorcraft or other complex dynamic systems.

* Development of algorithms, models, and simulation for aircraft control systems

* Works closely with hardware and software engineering teams as well as flight test to drive successful implementation of designs on various aircraft

* Understanding of system safety design concepts as they apply to flight control systems, redundancy, and monitoring

* Understands and considers design assurance levels in the AFCS design

* Serves as the primary customer interface and technical owner for a given AFCS program including overall system architecture and functions as well as management of program issues and risks.

* May lead product definition and creation of technical product proposals and related documentation in response to customer request

* Creates and communicates status updates regarding relevant program progress and issues for internal stakeholders

Qualifications

Qualified candidates possess a Master of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Math, Physics, or Mechanical Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience OR Bachelor of Science Degree in any of the fields noted above from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other requirements include:

* Experience using MatLab or Simulink design tools
* Fluency and understanding of C programming language
* Demonstrates understanding of system architectures and the effects on the control system
* Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
* Pilot’s license or demonstrated knowledge of piloting skills and procedures is a plus

Experience with flight dynamics and non-linear systems is preferred. Software development experience, including understanding of DO-178C requirements and avionics hardware development experience is highly preferred!
