Please note that this position is contingent on funding.

The successful applicant will have a broad background in theoretical and hands-on scientific and research principles. Additionally, good hands-on mechanical skills for the building and manipulation of equipment is required. The position may also involve the building of research apparatus, equipment, and systems.

The current projects focus is on: 1) supporting the Mitigation of Silver Ion Loss Project which is investigating the use of polymer coating to minimize the loss of silver ions to the metallic surfaces, and 2) The BioMoSS Project which uses the CVD grown semiconductor MoS2 as a photocatalyst for biocide control using visible light.

The optimal candidate will have good hands-on skills, have good laboratory skills, and have a working knowledge in one or more of the areas of: polymers, CVD, semiconductors, photocatalysis, ion chemistry, and biocidal agents as they relate to the above projects.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Support the development of Life Support Chemical and Scientific Research including the analysis, evaluation, and testing of chemical and scientific systems for Life Support applications.

· Provide support including scientific and technical work in the preparing and conducting of laboratory experiments, assembly and disassembly of laboratory hardware and systems, modeling of laboratory test systems, design of laboratory test systems, and planning of projects.

· Conduct research and development on the Mitigation of Silver Ion Loss Project, and the BioMoSS Project. This includes activities such as: development of conceptual ideas to further the development of these projects, daily laboratory research, and interpretation of research results.

· Maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus in working order, and maintain a safe and organized laboratory area including clean-up of hazardous spills.

· Support laboratory tasks as needed such as construction of test equipment, testing, and cleaning.

· Perform statistical analysis, compilation of experimental data, and prepare data for reports and presentations.

· Prepare lists of items required to conduct laboratory experiments, and shall obtain product information, identify vendors and suppliers, assist in the preparation of material and supply acquisition, and order materials and equipment to maintain inventory.

· Occasionally work either extended hours or an adjusted shift such as early morning or late at night during periods of equipment and process testing.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience:

Bachelor Degree with 1+ years of experience or a Masters with 1+ years of experience in either Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Physics, Material Science, Biology/Biochemistry if combined with another scientific discipline, or related scientific fields. General knowledge of scientific instruments and techniques and scientific theory behind those instruments.

Required Skills/Training:

· Must have knowledge of computer operating systems and applications to include Microsoft Office.

· Strong ability to work independently with minimal instruction.

· Ability to learn new skills and move into new areas of research quickly and independently.

· Ability to follow written or oral instructions by supervisors as needed to participate in laboratory investigations.

· Ability to easily adjust to changing activities and plans.

· Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.

· Ability to interact with others (co-workers, supervisors, other NASA agency personnel and the general public) to include courtesy, tact and diplomacy as needed to provide/gather information and establish effective working relationships.

Desired Education, Experience, Skills or Training:

Multi-disciplinary background with working knowledge in photolysis, photocatalyst, electrochemistry, polymer chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and to a lesser degree, basic biology or biochemistry. This position is not looking for a biologist.
