Job Description
SUMMARY
Plan, layout, fabricate and assemble less complex new or non-standard products, tooling and special machinery, or rebuild selected precision machines in support of research and development prototype shop operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
*
Responsible to plan for, layout materials, setup, operate or rebuild selected machines, fabricate, assemble and proof less complex products, tooling, test equipment and special machines which are new or non-standard in design where it is necessary to adapt tooling to hold work materials in support of research and development prototype shop operations. Utilize a thorough knowledge of prototype and machine shop theory and an ability to use any tools or equipment in precision assembly procedures and techniques, and to train employees in these practices.
*
Plan methods and sequences of operations to fabricate completely, proof, repair or rework less complex new or non-standard design product, tooling, test equipment or special machine. Obtain information lacking on design print or coordinate for tooling where no design exists. Perform layouts on project items to facilitate fabrication process, and, when not rigidly specified, establish dimensions, more suitable configurations or material substitutions. Make complete setup on prototype shop manually or computer numerical control (CNC) operated machines where it is necessary to adapt tooling, devise unusual machining methods, minimize amount of machining or number of setups, or to perform typical operations within capability of machine.
*
Perform machining on new or non-standard items where extra care and attention is required to hold machining requirements consistently with good output. Assemble, and fit and smooth parts into less complex tooling, equipment, machines or mechanisms and functionally check operation including location and resolution of various mechanical problems encountered.
*
Coordinate with tooling requesters and interpret selected work criteria, equipment capability, fabrication results and potential product or tooling design changes. Train company personnel in manual skills associated with less complex prototype shop practices. Coordinate activities of supporting prototype machinists.
*
Set up and operate, or maintain, rebuild and proof less complex machines, fabricating equipment, tooling or accessories in general prototype shop usage.
*
Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
*
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
*
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
*
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of CNC Programming Software.
Required Experience/Education:
*
Three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
