The Heat Treatment of Gears is critical to the operation of the Transmissions Centre of Excellence in Yeovil. All Gears are heat treated, a process which alters the structure of the steel to deliver the performance required by the Designer. This is a highly specialised process; and on the Yeovil site it is only performed within the Transmissions Centre of Excellence. The majority of gears are VITAL or Critical Grade parts.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Oversee a team of experienced technicians performing analyses, tests and monitoring of ferrous heat treated components to ensure the technical integrity of heat treatment, and that metallurgical and mechanical processes are in compliance with in house specification requirements.
  • Specify heat treated processes, in line with company specifications, to ensure that components are heat treated in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Develop operating procedures, reports and work instructions in order to approve and control metallurgical testing related to process quality assurance.
  • Ensure that accurate records of heat treatment processing & testing are maintained.
  • Manage the Nadcap process for heat treatment.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

  • Graduate in metallurgy, Material Science, or Engineering with strong metallurgical bias.
  • Experience of working in heat treatment environment with knowledge of heat treatment processes inc. carburising.
  • Experience of testing methodology inc. Tensile testing, Impact testing, Hardness testing , metallurgy and case depth management.
  • Experience of working in a company that is Nadcap accredited.
  • Willingness to be flexible and work on cross department projects and initiatives.
  • Computer literate.
