Role Summary

Reporting to the Engineering Director, the Engineering Manager is responsible for the provision and allocation of all Engineering resources to support the delivery of the Engineering activities, including the functional line management of the Mechanical Design, Stress, Performance, Safety & Reliability, Material & Process, and Product Support Engineering staff. The Test Manager and Configuration Manager report to the Engineering Manager.

Requirement of the Role

  • Responsible for the provision and allocation of all Engineering resources to support the delivery of the Engineering projects and sustaining activities. Functional line management of the Mechanical Design, Stress, Performance, Safety & Reliability, Material & Process, and Product Support Engineering staff. (Note day to day management of the Mechanical Engineers is provide by the Engineering Project Managers, supported by the Principal Mechanical Design Engineers, and the Stress and Performance staff are managed day to day by the Principal Stress Engineer)
  • Responsible for the recruitment, career development, mentoring, provision of training and development, and performing annual appraisals for all engineering resources in the team, assisted as appropriate by their Function Managers (Test and Config), their Engineering Project Manager, and associated Principal Engineers.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and development (CI) of Engineering Processes & Procedures, Design Guides, etc., assisted by subject matter experts and/or function managers, includes supporting audits of Engineering processes and procedures by external auditors.
  • Collaborate with Head of Projects and the Sustaining Engineering Manager to establish a supply of Engineering resources (internal and external) to support the engineering resource demands, balanced with the current business constraints.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with external agencies for the provision of on-site and off-site engineers or engineering capabilities that can be used to supplement peak resource demands, and thereby smooth the permanent hire requirements.
  • Support bids and proposal activities, eg. through the provision of subject matter experts to supplement bid team resources.
  • Completion of any work-related tasks, which would be deemed reasonable of this role.
Requirements of the individual
  • Degree in Engineering or Scientific subject, or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and motivate large teams, and experience of second line management (management of managers).
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, motivate, and develop individuals with a wide range of career durations and technical capabilities, over a range of engineering disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of working with aircraft systems, sub-systems or products, including experience of the design lifecycle, verification and validation requirements, and production processes.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of the rigour required of Engineering processes and procedures necessary in an aircraft product development environment.
  • Strong ability to work in a collaborative, cross discipline environment.
  • Demonstrated ability of analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to present clear, concise information at the A&C Directors and President level.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
