Job Summary
Rockwell Collins is seeking an Engineering Co-op to join the Commercial Systems Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety (RMS) team in supporting the development of innovative aviation electronics solutions for the world’s leading Air Transport and Business & Regional aircraft companies. If you are interested in a dynamic environment for personal and professional growth, we invite you to explore this opportunity.
Specific assignments may range from:
* Helping to conduct Accelerated Stress Testing, which includes testing products in a Highly Accerelated Stress Testing chamber that stresses products thermally and with vibration, separately and combined. This chamber has Liquid Nitrogen boost and super heaters that allow ambient air transition rates of up to 80°C/min. This is a systematic way to accelerate the aging process of the products in order to identify and correct any design or manufacturing process issues prior to fielding the equipment.
* Helping to conduct Proof of Screen tests which validate the Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) profiles used for Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) in manufacturing of avionics. ESS is a method of testing equipment to precipitate latent defects out of the products prior to customer delivery. HASS is an accelerated method to conduct ESS and each product must be qualified for HASS before the population of products can undergo this screening. The PoS validates the HASS profile and ensures that the high environmental stresses applied to the products will not harm them, or reduce their useful life.
* Assisting Reliability Engineers with reliability predictions using the Windchill Reliability Prediction software tool. The output of the software tool serves a few purposes: failure rates are provided for each component predicted, which are then used in predicting the frequency of failure of specific failure modes in a product (used in FMEAs and Fault Trees), to provide an initial idea of what the field reliability of a product will be once put into service (MTBF), and sometimes for estimating the differences in reliability of competing designs.
* Assisting Reliability Engineers with Failure Modes and Effects Analyses, which are done to identify functional or component failure modes and their associated effects on the equipment and system in order to ensure that they are detectable and do not have the possibility of creating an unsafe effect on the operation of the aircraft.
* Assisting Reliability and Safety Engineers with a variety of other engineering tasks, including Derating Analyses, Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSAs), System Safety Assessments (SSAs), Fault Tree Analyses (FTAs), etc.
Assignment Complexity:
The individual will generally work in the Reliability and Safety engineering disciplines, which are not a normal part of most engineering degree curriculums, but for which an Electrical Engineering (or possibly a Mechanical Engineering background) is ideally suited.
Accountability:
The individual will work under general and limited direction in relation to long range organization and group goals as well as being responsible for successful completion of assigned tasks within the committed schedule. The individual will be held accountable for implementing the workload set forth by the Group Manager and the assigned engineering mentor.
Job Responsibilities
* Must be registered as a full-time student in an undergraduate technical BS degree program. Co-op must be accepted in to their respective school’s cooperative education program (where applicable) and should begin their co-op experience no earlier than beginning of sophomore year. Co-ops progress into higher labor grades and receive greater responsibility and exposure when they return for each new work session.
* Registered college student pursuing a technical undergraduate BS degree. Student must be enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4 year institution.
* Student must be registered and accepted into their respective school’s co-operative program.
* Student must have basic skills and qualities that should align with skills and qualities comparable to peers in the same organization.
* Provides complimentary technical support to a department and performs various duties dependent upon the department in which the position resides.
* This position orients the student to the technical environment. It may include assignments in the electrical, computer, aerospace, industrial or mechanical engineering or computer science disciplines.
* Co-ops are required to take a semester off of school to gain full-time work experience, therefore this position is an extension/addition to the student’s education and career.
Basic Qualifications
*
U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residence (Green Card) is required.
*
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.
Requirements:
* Basic knowledge of physics and electronics
* Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office tools is required
* Completion of Sophomore year in an Engineering degree program is a minimum requirement, ideally the candidate is pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree (a Mechanical Engineering candidate might also qualify).
The individual must also have the following abilities:
* Self-motivation
* Effective oral/written communication skills (including technical writing)
* Effective interpersonal and team skills
