Job Description

The Network Operations team is responsible for providing the maximum possible service availability and performance of the AA Enterprise Network, 24/7.  As a part of the Network Ops team, the Network Operations Engineer will be responsible for providing LAN/WAN/WLAN expertise to solve Tier-2/3 level production break-fix issues that may arise from the more than 5,000 network devices (routers/switches/wireless access points/wireless controllers) that drive network connectivity for American Airlines world-wide.  The incumbent should have relevant experience working with multiple vendors, internal customers and infrastructure teams to drive the timely resolution of network incidents with superior customer service skills.  In addition, the Network Operations Engineer must be willing to participate in an on-call rotation.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline with an IT focus is preferred
  • 8+ yrs of (LAN/WAN) experience, with the candidate’s most recent responsibilities showing a progression to that of a “Tier 3” Support Engineer (or similar capacity)
  • Cisco CCIE level certification or equivalent experience
  • Self-starter with a high level of initiative
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, flexible, work well under pressure
  • Demonstrate advanced problem solving skills, have strong presentation and analytical skills, and possess a strong desire to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong working knowledge of routers and L2/L3 switches.  Also have a good understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, SNMP), routing protocols (BGP, EIGRP, and OSPF), WAN and LAN technologies (VRF, VLANs)
  • Good planning/organization capability and ability to make decisions quickly
  • Proven ability to manage multiple vendors in an outsourced IT environment
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to present technical data in a manner understandable to the particular audience for both technical and non-technical discussions

Job Qualifications (Continued)

The Network Operations Engineer should have a strong working knowledge of Local, Wireless Local & Wide Area Networks (LAN/WLAN/WAN) and should possess a firm grasp of TCP/IP and SNMP fundamentals.  In addition the candidate should have a strong and demonstrable familiarity with the following:

  • Cisco IOS – Switching and Routing
  • NetFlow
  • Routing protocols – BGP, EIGRP, OSPF
  • Ingrained troubleshooting methodology that can quickly adapt to the AA environment
  • Ability interpret network diagrams and draw network diagrams using MS Visio
  • Experience with the common MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.)

 

Additionally, experience with the following equipment types is strongly desired:

  • OpNet tool suite (SNMP/Netflow based)
  • HP H3C Switching technologies
  • CA Spectrum for performance monitoring
