Would you like to play a key role in the design and development of radar products? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Mechanical Engineer at our site in Cowes, Isle of Wight.
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be working as part of the Product and Training Services (P&TS) Engineering Function that delivers all design, development, support to manufacturing and in-service support of radar products. You will be working across products such as: the Sampson multi-function radar fitted to the T45 Destroyer, the Artisan surveillance and target indication radar fitted to T23 Frigates, and the Commander Air Defence land-based radar, in service with the RAF.
Working as part of a multidiscipline team, you will be reporting to the Programme Engineering Manager for the Radar product and may have one or more Mechanical Engineers reporting into you for key tasks. You will be involved in design activities for radar products, ensuring a more affordable product, enhancing the capability and availability of the radar for customers.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Mechanical Engineer will involve:

Carrying out mechanical engineering design tasks to include feasibility studies, research, design, development and post design services, involving the full Engineering Lifecycle, to meet defined project and business requirements
Carrying out mechanical structural analysis, hand calculations, FEA modelling and thermal analysis
Specifying the materials, tolerances, finishes, composite construction, strengths and weights of all aspects of mechanical design in radar products
Drafting, vetting and editing technical reports or other documents to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients
Preparing and submitting technical proposals and tenders as directed by a bid manager in order to provide costed proposals for future work
Underwriting and estimating bids, within authorised value levels, to ensure that they capture all requirements, customer obligations and acceptance criteria
Liaising with MOD establishments, test facilities, sub-contractors and customers as required to satisfy the needs of project or the business

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Mechanical Engineer:

Essential:
Mechanical engineering degree or equivalent
Mechanical development experience
Experience mentoring others/leading more junior staff members
Previous experience of operating in a defence or high safety integrity environment
