Job Description

The Operations Research and Advanced Analytics Department at American Airlines currently has an opening for an OR Consultant. Positioned within the Information Technology organization, this department functions as an internal consulting group providing quantitative analysis and decision support for business units throughout the airline. Assignments within OR typically involve quantitative and qualitative analysis of a business situation, model prototyping, development of recommendations and written and/or oral presentation of those recommendations. Quantitative techniques utilized may include forecasting, mathematical programming and other optimization techniques, simulation, stochastic modeling, data mining, decision analysis and machine learning. A significant component of many assignments will be the implementation of prototype solutions using third-party optimization, statistical analysis and simulation tools (XPress, CPLEX, SAS, R, Arena, Simio) and programming languages such as Python, VBA, Java and C++.

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering or a related field
  • Demonstrated aptitude for logical analysis, problem identification and problem solving as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to use computer-based tools and programming languages to implement solutions
  • Experienced in an object-oriented programming language such as Java, C++, C#, or VB.Net

 

Desired Qualifications

  • 2+ years’ experience in a technical professional environment
  • Familiarity with the airline/travel industry
  • Experience solving large-scale optimization problems
  • Expertise in using databases and query tools such as Access or SQL
  • Expertise in using visualization software such as Tableau or Cognos
  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • SAS or R programming
    • Integer programming or non-linear optimization
    • Crew, network or fleet planning
    • Designing and conducting workforce and talent analyses using analytical techniques such as statistics, surveys, data mining and forecasting to answer talent management questions of strategic and tactical importance
    • Data Mining/Big Data concepts and tools. Knowledge of classification, statistical and machine learning algorithms for predictive and prescriptive analytics. Ability to wrangle data from disparate sources into a comprehensive view of a business problem. Prior experience with recommender systems and/or text mining a plus
