Job Description

Metallurgical Lab Technician

Under Quality Engineering supervision, Metals Lab Technicians are responsible for the receipt and quality assessment of raw materials into the plant. These materials are to be controlled through chemistry checks and applicable tensile testing. Technicians prepare samples for relevant test work, ensure that samples are properly routed and received in a timely manner, all related reports are completed and presented timely and accurately.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Metal Lot Acceptance and Over Check
* Weld Wire Acceptance and Over Check
* Review Heat Treat Charts
* Enter Test Results into CDCS
* internal and external

* Coordinate movement of test material for internal and external testing
* Tensile Testing
* Sample preparation and testing

* Rockwell Testing
* Daily Verification and sample testing

* Metallography
* Sample preparation and examination

* Ensures paperwork is properly done to document processes and maintain lot traceability requirements.
* Follows established work instructions/techniques as well as housekeeping and safety practices to maintain the quality of the work environment.

EQUIPMENT

* Metal Lathe used to machine bars of metal
*

Preparing (sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching) met samples

*

Use enclosed saws

*

Handling hazardous chemicals

*

Use of Vibropeen pen to mark test material

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

* Assists in training lower level operators and interns.
* Participation in Round Robin and Proficiency Testing.
* Create test reports for metallographic examination; Timely, accurate data entry (CDCS and Innovator)
*

Reading and understanding work instructions, writing and correcting PO’s

* Communicate verbally and in writing effectively and professionally with staff, engineers, customers, etc.
* Communicate problems in the lab to Lab Supervisor or Quality Manager]
* Performs other functions as necessary or as assigned.

NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS

* Interacts daily with supervisors, leads and others to discuss and resolve product and business matters.
* Interacts occasionally with maintenance in the plant to discuss equipment concerns.

* Interacts regularly with engineers, quality, customer service, and others to discuss product issues.

A High School Diploma or GED; three or more years of demonstrated experience in manufacturing, production; or any combination of training, education and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

* Able to speak/communicate effectively, read and comprehend English
* Able to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with tens and 100s.
* Able to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
* Able to read, understand, and complete all department and/or technical and production documents.
* Able to apply sound judgement and understanding to carry out instructions; written, oral or diagram form.
* Able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
* Makes decisions when general instructions, established methods and clearly defined precedents indicate action to be taken, but refers unusual problems to supervisors.
* Willing and able to work occasional overtime and weekends as business needs demand
* Intermediate to high computer skills including; use of Outlook email, business writing skills, Excel, Word
* Able to communicate effectively with co-workers and others verbally and in writing

* Able to comply with company policy and procedures, including safety, quality, and attendance.

Exercises a high degree of care in the handling of parts to avoid damage.

* Completion of and ability to apply information from hazardous waste training required due to potential coordination of hazardous waste handling in areas of responsibility.
* Occasional handling of high and extreme low temperature objects, i.e. handle dry ice, operate a furnace.
