About the role:

Virgin Australia’s dynamic Airline Operations API devops team are currently recruiting for a Devops Developer specialising primarily in Java on AWS based services. Your software applications will support and enhance all aspects of the Airline Operations: an operationally complex set of mission critical business functions which are responsible for guest satisfaction by keeping the airline flying safely, on-time, and efficiently 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

You will provide first-rate architectural, theoretical, technical, and industry best practice design and implementation of systems and systems integrations relating to Airline Operations in collaboration with other Airline Operations API devops team members. You will develop and maintain software solutions as required by the business including:

* Accountability for solutions outcome, code quality and end to end delivery cycle.

* Contributing to technical solution design, estimation, and delivery for business requirements.

* Process Improvement and Implementation processes, including the improvement of automated practices in the team.

* Providing oversight and governance of the development initiatives.

Keeping up to date with industry trends and best practices is crucial to this role, as is an outstanding attention to detail as this team is Virgin Australia’s leading-edge devops team driving significant innovation into Virgin Australia’s development pipeline.

Please note that this role, as a devops role, requires rostered out-of-hours on-call support.

Detail orientated. Airline operations is complex problem space with multiple variables, nearly all of which are important to operational efficiency and some of which are sometimes critical to flight safety. You can maintain your attention to detail of the complex interlocking variables.

A people person. You collaborate and engage with the internal and external stakeholders, understanding relationships are key.

What you’ll need:

* Significant background experience in a software development related role including experience using a variety of software development methodologies and languages. We are looking for excellent proficiency in some combination of the following technologies:

* Java

* Hibernate/JPA

* Messaging/JMS

* Maven

* Git

* AWS

* Experience with some of the following is desirable:

* React JS

* npm

* Gitlab / Gitlab CI

* Wildfly Swarm or similar JEE

* Kubernetes / Docker

* Ansible

* /bin/sh

* polyglot programming

* functional programming

* Good understanding of:

* devops principles

* automated testing, CI/CD

* lightweight service design

* agile, lean, or kanban

* Proven experience in analysing and documenting user requirements

* Experience participating in code reviews and advising developers on best practices for software development including coding standards and development methodologies

* Experience reviewing and implementing ongoing process improvement activities

* Detailed understanding of software architecture and design principles
