Firmware Engineer (FPGA Design)

Crawley - 6 month contract - £45 to £51 p/h Ltd

Primary Purpose of the Job

To become a key part of a team with a proven track record for delivering firmware for a wide range of land, sea and air based defence related products, developing bespoke hardware solutions for Customers or standard reusable solutions for Product Lines and variants thereof.

Projects involve using the latest industry class development tools for FPGA and SoC hardware technologies. Work is carried out to a structured hardware design process.

The role will offer experience over a number of different product areas, encompassing everything from product design and development through to larger scale platform integration and will be focussed around the core skills associated with a Digital Hardware / Firmware Engineer, including the following: FPGA / VHDL hardware architecture, requirements specification, schematic capture, design, Firmware (FPGA / VHDL) development, hardware integration, verification, validation and design assurance activities.

Key Tasks

  • Decomposition and interpretation of system requirements & algorithms
  • Design and develop firmware using Hardware Description Languages or High Level Synthesis Languages
  • Simulation and analysis
  • Verify firmware using Hardware Description languages or Hardware Verification Languages
  • Integration of firmware on the target hardware
  • Test, measurement, debug and verification (digital)
  • Design Assurance (Complex Electronics)
  • Technical assistance to production

Essential Skills

  • Digital electronic design in hardware development language (VHDL)
  • Proven ability with Xilinx FPGAs
  • Implementation of complex designs
  • DSP techniques
  • Simulation of designs
  • Implementation of algorithms
  • Knowledge of RF processing techniques
  • An excellent understanding of the fundamentals of High speed digital design
  • A working knowledge of Signal Integrity Analysis
  • A working knowledge of Microprocessors, programmable devices, DSP, FPGA, memory
  • Knowledge of PCB design constraints
  • CAD tools: Cadence DE HDL for schematic capture, Mentor HDL Designer for VHDL entry & Mentor Graphics ModelSim for Verification

Desirable

  • Knowledge of FPGA architectures
  • Knowledge of Xilinx 7 series, Ultrascale +
  • Knowledge of Verification Methodology: UVM
  • Knowledge of scripting languages: TCL, PERL, Python
  • Team leadership / Work package management
  • Design for manufacture / test / support
  • Knowledge of Agile techniques / Lean Engineering
  • Appreciation of the fundamentals of analogue, RF, electro-mechanical and mechanical engineering
  • Use of Altera Quartus II and Matlab
  • Knowledge of DO-254 Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware
  • Product development knowledge for commercial markets
