Director of Aviation Operations

Location: Cranfield, Bedfordshire

Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management. It is unique in Europe in that it owns and operates an airport and flying operation (the National Flying Laboratory Centre).

We are looking for a Director of Aviation Operations who will be responsible for the strategic and day-to-day management of the University’s aviation operations including:

  • Cranfield Airport

  • Cranfield Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service

  • National Flying Laboratory Centre

  • Cranfield’s Air Navigation Service Provider

The Director of Aviation Operations will be the Accountable Manager reporting directly to the University’s Chief Financial Officer. (As such, appointment to the role will be subject to approval from the CAA.)

Our number one priority is safe operations in accordance with National (CAA) and European (EASA) requirements. The Director of Aviation Operations will lead a team of nominated postholders (some of whom will act as Deputy Accountable Managers) including a group-level safety manager.

The Director of Aviation Operations is tasked with ensuring that aviation operations support the work of the University in a safe, effective and efficient manner. They will play a key role in the strategic development of the airport including seeking and exploiting commercial opportunities that are compatible with the University’s mission. This will include working closely with academic colleagues to support research developments such as the Aerospace Integration Research Centre (AIRC), the proposed Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre (DARTeC) and increased use of UAV/RPAS.

For an informal discussion, please contact Prof Graham Braithwaite, Director of Transport Systems.
