SCOPE

Working in the Cost Estimating team, the cost engineer is an integral member of the GSS Product Line & US & Canada Project Execution teams. The cost engineer actively participates in all levels of proposals to understand competitive costs and defining proper scope and execution strategies for various plants. The cost engineer is also responsible for supporting the project team with construction estimating and contractor negotiations. This position works under little supervision, receiving general guidance and direction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Understanding and driving scope definition and limiting scope creep

* Generating and validating cost models for plants combining internal Praxair project history, general construction industry data, published material indices and contractor inputs

* Thorough knowledge of general engineering management practices from a standpoint of effectively estimating engineering labor hours

* Thorough knowledge of general industrial (petrochemical) construction practices

* Thorough knowledge and application of regional differences in costs

* Maintaining current cost models

* Maintaining commodity prices and forecasts

* Evaluating plant competitiveness through research and analysis of known competitor offerings

* Influencing team members and promoting ideas and optimization for cost effectiveness

* Developing cost comparisons of offshore prefabrication and onshore field construction of portions of the plant scope - comparisons include impact of shipping, schedule and tariffs

* Identifying project risks and opportunities

* Generating bottoms-up (FEL-2 control cost) estimates

* Seeking out industry standards, professional organizations to provide estimating basis to generate quick, top-down (FEL-1 high-level) estimates under short time constraints

* Interfacing with, and conducting effective presentations to internal and external customers at all organizational levels

* Promoting ideas and providing feedback for improvement of design and construction

* Keeping current with state of the art estimating tools, practices and concepts

* Providing training and supervision to junior engineers

* Develop cross-functional work processes across skill teams and with appropriate non-Praxair resources.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
(Position will be filled at a level commensurate with experience)
Basic:

* BS Engineering with 5+ years’ experience in process, equipment, design or construction engineering

* Expert knowledge of industrial estimating and cost modeling systems is desired, along with familiarity with specific construction and engineering contractor methodologies

* Experience using a construction estimate tool; Timberline a plus

* Advanced Excel skills required

* Travel of 5-15% can be expected

Preferred:

* MS Engineering with 10+ years’ experience in process, equipment, design or construction engineering
