SCOPE:

The APCE will be a member of the Global Operations Excellence & Development (GOED) engineering team. In this role, the selected candidate will be responsible for working on cost reduction opportunities using advanced process control, system optimization, process engineering analyses, and multivariate statistical principles. You will implement advanced control strategies using model predictive control (MPC) and Real Time Optimization (RTO) software on Praxair’s air separation, carbon dioxide or hydrogen plants. You will also interface with Global Operations and Operations Engineering support teams in maintaining these applications at peak efficiency and providing guidance for optimal plant configurations using model-based optimization tools.

You must possess the ability and desire to work in a fast paced chemical plant operations environment. Successful candidates will have deployed multiple MPC applications on process units. You should also be capable of leading small (2-3 person) project teams. The ability to work on multiple projects at a time, and mentoring junior engineers is also desired.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Implement advanced control strategies using model predictive control (MPC) and Real Time Optimization (RTO) software on Praxair’s air separation, carbon dioxide or hydrogen plants

*

Interface with Global Operations and Operations Engineering support teams

*

Provide guidance for optimal plant configurations using model-based optimization tools

*

Review plant operations on a regular basis to monitor plant and equipment performance

*

Accountability for overall system efficiency and champion KPIs that measure the overall "health" of the installed base of APC applications

*

Focus on reducing variable costs which will require a good understanding of Praxair plant operating philosophy

Qualifications

(Salary and Job Level Commensurate with Experience)

Basic:

*

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering

*

Ability to travel up to 30% of the time (domestic and international) with travel is in blocks of 2-3 weeks spread over the year

*

Practical experience demonstrating knowledge of industrial model-based advanced (centralized multivariable) process control & optimization

*

Experience with plant instrumentation systems (Rockwell, Delta V, Honeywell, Yokogawa etc.)

*

Experience with commercial model predictive control software like DMCplus, RMPCT

Preferred:

*

Master’s degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering

*

5 or more years of experience in related chemical process industries like pulp and paper, oil and gas, refining, specialty chemicals

*

Experience with mathematical modeling and optimization software (Matlab, Unisim, Emerson AMS, Aspen RTO, ROMeo, Gams, Hysys, AspenPlus etc.)

*

Background in usage and deployment of OTS systems

*

Good understanding of statistical principles like PCA/PLS, correlation and regression analysis etc. for use in plant data analysis

*

Candidates with experience using any programming language, e.g. FORTRAN, Visual Basic, C, C++, C#
